The International Justice Project has created a sample clemency letter for interested users. Please visit a case profile to learn more about an offender before writing a clemency letter. If sending a clemency letter, please feel free to use our sample letter as a template. Ensure that all blank sections are completed and please delete any text in italics.

It is important to remember the following when writing a clemency letter:

  • Always reference that neither your letter, nor clemency excuses the crime, nor does it minimize the pain or suffering of the victim's family and friends.
  • Always write in a respectful, non-belligerent tone.

Other relevant information which should be included in any clemency letter is the following:

  • Whether you are a citizen of the state where the execution is to take place.
  • Any trial or appellate irregularities that you think are important.
  • Specific instances of abuse, or other mitigating factors, that were brought to your attention by this site.
  • Note whether this execution would be the state's first such execution since reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976. Click here to see a list of state's that have executed juvenile offenders.
